Everyone knows that the tribe of Zebulun sits on the seashore. This is how Jacob and Moses blessed him. But on the maps showing the settlement of the tribes, Zebulun sits inland, and the tribe of “Asher” sits on the seashore! We will offer various answers to explain this, and finally present a geographical study that claims that the coastline has completely changed from the time of Moses to the present day! Why is the Mediterranean called “the last sea”? A surprising explanation that appears in our sources in several places is that the Mediterranean Sea was created last, long after the creation of the world, when the Atlantic Ocean flooded the area between Europe and Africa, which was until then dry! Even more surprising – this description is supported by recent geological studies conducted at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea

Is the sea itself part of the Land of Israel? And if so, to what extent? Has someone who bathes in the sea gone abroad? We will look at the different opinions that already appear in the Mishnah – from the opinion that only the sea adjacent to the coast is considered part of the Land of Israel to the opinion that the Mediterranean Sea as far as Spain is part of the Land of Israel! And following the opinions in the Mishnah, we will look at the halakhic rulings of our time regarding swimming in the sea

Is the Mediterranean part of the Land of Israel? This time we will see the surprising implications of this discussion: Is someone who lives in France and Spain also considered to be living in the Land of Israel? We will also learn the halachic ruling regarding going on a trip abroad. And we will begin to learn about the cities of the seashore, and the first city: Jaffa. The Torah describes the border of the tribe of Dan as: “Mul” (apposite? facing? next to?) Jaffa. We will study the word “Mul” in the Bible to understand what is meant.

First, we will see another angle on the subject of the Mediterranean Sea in the days of Genesis. Does this contradict what we learned in Lecture 3? And getting back to Jaffa: There are only 4 mentions of Jaffa in the Bible, but we can learn from them the recurring theme associated with Jaffa: a place that constitutes a junction between the external and material world and the world of holiness and spirituality. And approaching the month of Adar, we will see an interesting connection between Jaffa and the Book of Esther!

The history and significance of the city: Yafo. There is a tradition that Yafo was named after Japheth, the son of Noah. And that Noah himself is buried under the Andromeda Rock, a well-known rock near the shores of Yafo. Is there a source for this? We`ll see what AI has to say about that.. Why did the prophet Jonah, who lived in the north, flee to the port of Yafo? This brings us back to the basic theme of Yafo- a meeting point between the material and the spiritual.
